My standard protocol for ensuring maximum stability of the orthodontic outcome is providing patients with upper and lower clear thermoplastic vacuum formed retainers along with upper and lower fixed bonded retainer wires. The fixed retainers in upper and lower arches typically bond on the front six teeth and extend from the left canine to the right canine.
The fixed retainer wire I typically provide is a customised laboratory made multi-strand stainless steel wire. As the retainer is bonded on the inside surfaces of the upper and lower front teeth, it is unnoticeable to anyone other than a dentist during a check-up.
For patients who wish for absolute discretion, I provide a gold-plated fixed retainer wire. Gold, as a material, blends in well with the shade of the teeth and the way it reflects the light ensures the thin wire that is bonded on the inside surfaces of teeth is very discreet.
